I never ask this first if I want to genuinely know someone. My first question may be name and what they do followed by age, education, where they are from (at least a brief history), perhaps. I expect a reciprocation of similar questions from them. Some questions such as age and education can be offensive to some, but asking about political views these days is usually dismissive.
